Cypress Mountain Remote Base Construction 1994WB6JWB Remote Base - 224.680 During the late 1980's, I was inspired to build a remote base and put it on a suitable mountain in San Luis Obispo County. After building the radio the search began. I started with a rented location in a commercial vault on Tassajara Peak, just north of San Luis Obispo. I learned a lot about hostile RF in those days from all of the nearby commercial transmitters, but enjoyed the stay at "Tass" while the space rent was reasonable. Unfortunately, the rent soon went up so I unplugged my radio and went off searching again.
Well before long I found another hilltop location in west Paso Robles; perfect for my needs. It seemed like good fortune when I learned the property owner was the brother in law of a long time friend and fellow ham radio operator. It "seemed" like good fortune at first because the property owner was all too willing to let me install the radio in his shed, only to raise the fee for doing so every other month. So out of the shed and back to the garage for my radio. It wasn't long before I observed another potential site, high above Cambria. The site already had a microwave relay station for cable TV. While there is no commercial power, I was sure willing to give solar power a try. I introduced myself to the property owners and low and behold, they are the nicest people on earth (Bill and Peggy Stephen, formerly from Cambria). After obtaining permission to install my radio, I built the "vault", bought the tower and other hardware, and went to business installing it. Here are some photo's of fourteen steps to a remote base installation.
